Shaun and I took part in the dCache workshop. Starting with a VM with a dCache RPM, the challenge was to set it up with two pools, NFS4, and WebDAV. A second VM got to access the data, mainly via NFS or HTTP(S) - security ranged from IP address to X.509 certificates. The overall impression was that it was pretty easy to get set up and configure the interfaces and get it to do something useful: dCache is not "an SRM" or "an NFS server" but rather storage middleware which provides a wide range of interfaces to storage. One of the things the dCache team is looking into is the cloud interface, via CDMI. This particular interface is not ready (as of March 2014) for production, but it's something we may want to look into and test with the EGI FC's version, Stoxy.

Have you heard this one before...
Sunny Amsterdam. Narrow streets, canals. Friendly locals, and a bicycle with your name on in it. Wonderful place for a WLCG data management jamboree.
The super brief summary of yesterday is that some people are pushing for a more network centric data model. They point to video streaming, although others point out that video streaming is very different from HEP analysis. (More in the next couple of GridPP storage meetings.)
Today is more on technology, some known, some less so. One particular piece I would like to highlight is NFS4.1 which is still progressing and is now said to be "wonderful." :-)
There are lots of discussions which sound oddly familiar. For example, use of P2P networks have been suggested before (by Owen, back in EDG) and it's now coming up again. But of course technology moves on and middleware matures, so revisiting the questions and the proposed solutions will hopefully be useful.

Update on the classic SE
As reported at last weeks WLCG operations meeting, the classic SE is now completely frozen (not that it affects any GridPP sites since we are all SRM-ified). There are a few points to note about this:
Are there things not in the classic SE that people want added? Any such features should already be in DPM so this is an acceptable upgrade.
Are there features in the classic SE that are not available in DPM or dCache? The obvious answer is real POSIX mounting of the file system probably via NFS. Both DPM and dCache are looking at supporting NFSv4, there are comments from both of these that NFSv4 might be available by end of the year or sooner.
Will the classic SE be included in the upcoming gLite release? The answer is yes, it will appear in gLite 3.1. Once there is a DPM with NFSv4 support then this will be re-evaluated.
