EUDAT and GridPP

EUDAT2020 (the H2020 follow-up project to EUDAT) just finished its kick-off meeting at CSC. Might be useful to jot down a few thoughts on similarities and differences and such before it is too late.

Both EUDAT and GridPP are - as far as this blog is concerned - data e- (or cyber-) infrastructures. The infrastructure is distributed across sites, sites provide storage capacity or users, there is a common authentication and authorisation scheme, there are data discovery mechanisms, both use GOCDB for service availability.

  • EUDAT will be using CDMI as its storage interface - just like EGI does - and CDMI is in many ways fairly SRM-like. We have previously done work comparing the two.
  • EUDAT will also be doing HTTP "federations" (i.e. automatic failover when a replica is missing; this is confusingly referred to as "federation" by some people).
  • Interoperation with EGI is useful/possible/thought-about (delete as applicable). EUDAT's B2STAGE will be interfacing to EGI - there is already a mailing list for discussions.
  • GridPP's (or WLCG's) metadata management is probably a bit too confusing at the moment since there is no single file catalogue 
  • B2ACCESS is the authentication and authorisation infrastructure in EUDAT; it could interoperate with GridPP via SARoNGS (ask us at OGF44 where we will also look at AARC's relation to GridPP and EUDAT). Jos tells us that KIT also have a SARoNGS type service.
  • Referencing a file is done with a persistent identifier, rather like the LFN (Logical Filename) GridPP used to have.
  • "Easy" access via WebDAV is an option for both projects. GlobusOnline is an option (sometimes) for both projects. In fact, B2STAGE is currently using GO, but will also be using FTS.
Using FTS is particularly interesting because it should then be possible to transfer files between EUDAT and GridPP. The differences between the projects are mainly that
  • GridPP is more mature - has had 14-15 years now to build its infrastructure; EUDAT is of course a much younger project (but then again, EUDAT is not exactly starting from scratch)
  • EUDAT is doing more "dynamic data" where the data might change later. Also looking at more support for the lifecycle.
  • EUDAT and GridPP have distinct user communities, to a first approximation at least.
  • The middleware is different; GridPP does of course offer compute where EUDAT will offer simpler server-side workflows. GridPP services are more integrated, where in EUDAT the B2 services are more separated (but will be unified by the discovery/lookup service and by B2ACCESS)
  • Authorisation mechanisms will be very different (but might hopefully interface to each other; there are plans for this in B2ACCESS).
There is some overlap between data sites in WLCG and those in EUDAT. This could lead to some interesting collaborations and cross-pollinations. Come to OGF44 and the EGI conference and talk to us about it.

Big data picture

Not as in ((big data) picture) but (big (data picture)), if that makes sense.

I find myself in Edinburgh - it's been far too long since I last was here, I am embarrassed to say.

We are looking at data movement for EUDAT and PRACE, and by a natural extension (being at EPCC), GridPP and DiRAC. The main common data mover is GridFTP: useful because we can (more or less) all move data with GridFTP, it gets great performance, we know how to tune and monitor it, and it supports third party copying. We also need to see how to bridge in GlobusOnline, with the new delegated credentials. In fact both Contrail and NCSA developed OAuth-delegated certificates (and while the original CILogon work was OAuth1, the new stuff is OAuth2.)

One use case is data sharing (the link is to a nice little video Adam Carter from EPCC showed in the introduction). You might argue that users are not jumping up and down screaming for interdisciplinary collaborations, yet if they were possible they might happen! When data policies require data be made available, as a researcher producing data you really have no choice: your data must be shareable with other communities.

How to build a Data Grid

Went yesterday to a collaboration meeting for OOI; their oceanographic data grid is a collaboration with IC and QMUL. What is interesting is their completely different approach to building a "data grid" from how we've done it.

Building data grids was the subject of our (GridPP storage and data management) presentation at AHM last year (how to build an infrastructure that'll cope with LHC data); and an extended version will be presented at ISGC in a few weeks (more infrastructure focus, less LHC.)

While ours was essentially communication, policies, and trust, theirs is a very computersciencey approach - a message based infrastructure which promotes data to a "first class citizen" and uses formal methods (via Scribble) to implement distributed systems with "guaranteed correct behaviour." Interestingly they have about the same data rates from their sensor networks as we have in T1. Their data stream will compress to 700 MB/s.

We have thought about using formal methods before (mostly in proposals that weren't funded :-)), so it will be interesting to compare their approach to existing data grids like ESG or WLCG. Furthermore, some of their tools, like Scribble, may well find uses in some of our other projects.

(BTW, I am calling these grids "data grids," but not as much in the SRB/iRODS sense. As someone pointed out in the session, the emphasis in (any) grid processing sensor or instrument data is on the data. Computation can in principle be redone but sensor data can never be recaptured.)

What I did in my CERN vacation

"On the first day of my CERN vacation, I arrived." ...Er.
In approximate order of usefulness, this is what I managed to get done at the 2.5 day workshop last week (I'll insert more stuff as I remember...) Other people should report on the non-storage.

  1. Thanks to the ever-helpful EGEE project office, got my paperwork renewed. Hooray!
  2. Working with Jan to deploy the CIP (CASTOR Information Provider) at CERN. Hooray!
  3. Catching up with the rest of the CASTOR team and getting lots of CASTOR related notes. There's a lot of new stuff in 2.1.8 (which can be deployed without GSIRFIO), and some strategic planning. xrootd is considered important strategically. Lots of other proposed developments. There is even a suggestion to investigate using Lustre for CASTOR. And how to best provide POSIX access?
  4. Kickstarting some work with DPM and dCache people. Even interoperation work is not completed and there are lots of little things to follow up on. For example, many SEs support xrootd but not necessarily interoperatingly. SE support for checksumming has improved a lot recently so is becoming increasingly promising.
  5. General GridPP-storage related stuff: priorities, experiment planning, site recovery from downtime.
  6. Catching up with Steven Newhouse over dinner Friday, talking about among other things standardisation work in EGEE (SRM, GLUE, etc), and EGI.
  7. Learning about the experiments storage experiences at the workshop. I heard both "it is too complex" and "we should make use of richer functionality". Made notes we should discuss in the storage meetings. Middleware plans are particularly important when there is no rollback out of an upgrade.
  8. Installed Capacity discussions. This should have been higher up this list as it was my primary reason for being there(!) but we only covered about 5% of what we ought to have covered. Still, 5% is better than 0%, and it was enough to solve 1 of my 7-8 remaining open use cases because dCache does something similar but complicatedlier. More on this later.
  9. FTS monitoring. Talked to Ricardo da Rocha who wants to do visualisation of FTS transfers. Well, whaddayaknow, we (GridPP) have already done this: Gidon built a version for me for the EGEE user forum in 2007 in Manchester, based on his work with the RTM. It uses RGMA monitored transfers, sped up x100 to make it look more interesting. Gidon gave me the source before he left. Unless someone from GridPP wishes to volunteer, I'll hand it over to Ricardo along with a suggestion to keep the "GridPP" sticker and give credit to Gidon.
  10. I am coordinating some additional work on SRM and SRB interoperation (beyond what we've achieved previously, I hope). I discussed my requirements for FTS with Paolo, Àkos, Gavin, et al. Simon Lin was there from ASGC so I got an update on Fu-Min's SRM-to-SRB layer.
  11. I've started using ROOT for some of the testing at RAL (obviously for rootd testing for LHCb) - some new features in PROOF may come in handy if we're to extend this.

NGS and GridPP - storage future?

The GridPP/NGS pow-wow yesterday was very useful. For storage, what can we do given that GridPP runs SRM, and the NGS uses SRB, distributed filesystems, Oracle, and OGSA-DAI?

We could of course look at interoperability: previously we achieved interoperation between SRM and SRB using gLite. (In GIN-ese, "interoperation" loosely speaking applies more than a works-for-now hack than "interoperability" which is meant to be a long-term solution.)

However, not many people really need interopera* between SRM and SRB at the moment, and when they do presumably the ASGC thingy will be ready. My observation would be that no one size fits all, different things do different things differently - we should not persuade NGS to run SRM any more than they should persuade us to store our data in SRB.

What I suggest we could more usefully do is to look at the fabric: we all (i.e. sites) buy disks and have filesystems and operating systems that need patching and tuning.
  • Procurement: sharing experiences, maybe even common tender at sites;
  • Infrastructure: how to structure storage systems (topology, networks etc);
  • Distributed filesystems?
  • Optimisation and tuning: OS, networks, filesystems, drivers, kernels, etc;
  • Technology watch: sharing experiences with existing technology (hardware) and tracking and testing new technology (e.g. SSD)
All of the above have traditionally been out of scope of the GridPP storage group which has focused on DPM and dCache support. However, by popular demand we have recently added a Hardware Korner, a monthly(ish) hardware discussion. And we keep discussing whether we need to support distributed filesystems (whether we can is another question).
