Filesystems turn readonly

Some of the RAID'ed filesystems at Edinburgh recently decided that they would become readonly. This caused the dCache pool processes that depended on them to fall over (Repository got lost). Some of the affected filesystems were completely full, but not all of them. An unmount/mount cycle seems to have fixed things. Anyone seen this sort of thing before?

It can happen in certain cases where there is some kind of read error and the kernel decides to turn the file system read only as a protection.
There should be a reason in /var/syslog/messages. I've only seen it happen once but it was RAL's /home file system that did it! I've noted that CERN systems have lemon check exactly for this kind of scenario so I guess they have seen it to.
